Carroll Aquatic Center ready to open

The Carroll Aquatic Center is ready to go for opening day Saturday, May 26th when the pool officially opens at 1:00.  It was filled a couple weeks ago and chemicals have been added.  Several PE classes rented the pool out and are hosting swimming events today.  Aquatic Center Director Marci Hinners says there won’t be any changes in staff numbers this year.

Monday MidAmerican Energy Company released a statement warning its customers to be aware of phone scams occurring in Iowa. Casey Stork 5k a big success

Sunday the Coon Rapids Community remembered one of its own with the 2nd annual Casey Stork 5k. Stork was a 16 year old high school student killed in a tragic auto accident near Glidden in June of 2009. Organizers reported raising over $3000 which is almost double the amount from last year’s event. The funds will go to the Casey Stork Scholarship Fund awarded to CRB students.

Greene County Medical Center to receive $20 Million Loan

The Greene County Medical Center will receive a big boost today from USDA Rural Development.  Agriculture Undersecretary for Rural Development, Dallas Tonsager is scheduled to announce $20 million in loans to the hospital while in Jefferson today.  The loans are to help expand and renovate the 75-year-old medical facility and create a state-of-the –art medical campus. 

Carroll County unemployment rate is low

With a 4.6% unemployment rate Carroll County continues to have one of Iowa’s lowest rates ranking 3rd in the latest report released by Iowa Workforce Development.  The county’s unemployment rate dropped around 1% from March 2011 to March 2012.  CADC Executive Director Jim Gossett says finding employees for potential businesses as well as maintaining good relationships with

High speed chase leds authorities through Sac, Calhoun and into Webster Counties

Construction causes Sac County Highway to be closed beginning Thursday

Carroll man arrested on assault charges

Lake City organizations receive funding through local program

4 organizations in Lake City received funding from the Calhoun County Community Foundation which distributes money generated through gambling operations in the state.  The Lake City Public Library was awarded $850, the ambulance department received $5,000 and the Top Rail Saddle Club was also awarded $5,000.  Those awards were granted to the city in the past few weeks. 

MRHC gets high rating from American Heart Association

The American Heart Association gave Manning Regional Healthcare Center a one rating during a recent site inspection.  The inspection was performed by the Mercy College Training Center.  They assessed the training provided in basic life support, advanced cardiac life support, pediatric advanced life support along with other community based educational programs.  The criteria were

David Wurr remains in jail awaiting hearing

County won't renew contract with Richmond Center

High bid delays action on Carroll Tennis Complex

The tennis court project in Carroll’s Graham Park was delayed Monday night by the Carroll City Council.  Mayor Adam Schweers asked the council to receive the bid from Badding Construction but to hold any discussion or awarding of the bid until the April 9th council meeting.  The reason for the delay is the bid received was higher than the engineers estimate for both four courts

Wurr of Manning faces Terrorism charges following standoff

58-year-old David Wurr of Manning faces a Class B Felony charge following the standoff Friday night and Saturday morning that ended when officers fired tear gas into the home and went in and apprehended Wurr.  Carroll County Sheriff Doug Bass says the standoff began around 5:30 Friday night after family members called the Manning PD and Sheriff’s office.
 

Phone scams in Carroll focus on Grandparents

The Carroll Police Department is warning residents about scams that have resurfaced the past few weeks.  Captain Mark Heino says the police department has received 5 calls in the past 3 weeks from local residents who have received calls from someone claiming that a grandson or granddaughter have been arrested and need bail money or have been injured and need money for medical reasons.

Carroll County approves budget

Residents of Carroll County will see a decrease in property taxes for the next fiscal year following the approval of the fiscal 2012-2013 budget by the board of supervisors Monday.  The countywide levy rate will reduce from 5.05166 to 4.53149 a decrease of around 52 cents from last year while the countywide rural rate will decrease from 8.01282 to 7.45783 for a decrease of around 55 cents

Lake City reviewing a couple of ordinances

Deck fire in Carroll Sunday afternoon

Enrollment down at Carroll DMACC Campus

Rescuers free man stuck overnight in Iowa cave

Rescuers have freed a man trapped overnight in a cave at an Iowa
state park.
     Iowa Department of Natural Resources spokesman Kevin Baskins
says 20-year-old Logan Eliasen, of Port Byron, Ill., was dislodged
from a narrow part of Wye Cave at Maquoketa Caves State Park about
3:30 p.m. Saturday. He'd been stuck there more than 20 hours.

A man has died in an accident at an Ames

Victim identified in fatal Scott County accident


A motorist killed Thursday morning in an eastern Iowa car crash has been identified. The Scott County Sheriff’s Office says 40-year-old Kristine Witcraft of Bettendorf was killed in the single-car accident north of Davenport in rural Scott County.

Witcraft was driving a mini-van when she lost control on a gravel road. The van rolled and ended up on its side in the roadway.

Bettendorf police say texting involved in I-74 accident






Police say this wreck was a result of texting and driving.


The driver hurt earlier this week in an eastern Iowa car wreck was texting. Bettendorf police say 24-year-old Jennifer DeClerck of Moline, Illinois, admitted to texting on her cell phone just before the crash on Interstate 74.

At last report, DeClerck was in fair condition at a Davenport hospital.

Report says food insecurity rising faster in rural areas

Despite being the breadbasket of the world, a new report shows poverty and food insecurity are rising faster in rural areas of the midwest than in urban areas. The report from the Center for Rural Affairs covers Iowa and nine other states. Report author Jon Bailey, the center’s research director, says the poverty comes from scarce jobs and paltry salaries.

Investigators still looking for cause of explosion at Mason City plant

A Mason City biodiesel plant will remain closed for now after an explosion on Tuesday night. The blast at Soy Energy did cause some damage but no injuries have been reported.

Man died in fall, Des Moines police say

Des Moines Police believe a man found dead outside an apartment building this morning died as the result of an accident.
Investigators were called to the scene, just west of downtown at the corner of 35th Street and Grand Avenue around 8 a.m.

Iowa man pleads not guilty to sex abuse of student

A 19-year-old man has denied accusations that he sexually abused an underage student while working at a western Iowa high school.

Atlantic radio station KJAN reports that Andrew Schoening, of Glenwood, pleaded not guilty last week to sexual abuse. A trial date has not been set.
