Swan lake State Park’s first ever Youth Outdoor Adventure Day turned out to have a great showing last Saturday. The event was a little different as it was geared to appeal to a little bit of an older crowd… girls and boys between the ages of 10 and 14.

The City of Glidden is approving their involvement with the Iowa Department of Transportation Iowa Senic Byways Program Jurisdiction Agreement for Signage Installation and Maintenance. 

Carroll Municipal Golf Tournament totals

The Eight Inch Cup Four Person Best Shot Golf Tournament raised a lot of money this past weekend.  The event was held to help raise money for the renovations of the clubhouse at the Carroll Municipal Golf Course. Close to $50,000 dollars was raised from the event which will cut into the cost of clubhouse renovations estimated to be around $130,000 dollars. 

Kuemper foundation receives bequest

Kuemper received a bequest from the family of Rose Marie Schweers of Carroll, formerly of Arcadia.  The 25,000 dollar bequest to the Kuemper Foundation will help establish the Rose Marie Schweers Endowed Fund.  The fund will have a perpetual scholarship for a graduating Kuemper eighth grader entering Kuemper high school. Schweers was born in Arcadia and attended St John’s Catholic

Carroll Band Day to change this year

The 53rd Annual Band Day Parade in Carroll will have a different look and feel this year.  Chamber of Commerce, Program Director Rosanne Nees says with the construction on 7th Street they’ve needed to make a change in this year’s route.  She says people will be able to enjoy some of the parade from a park.

Trees offered at Swan Lake State Park

The Carroll County Conservation Board is partnering up with Mid-American Energy to help plant some shade.  The two are offering a program to mid American customers in Iowa allowing them to purchase trees for 30 dollars each.  The tree purchase is initially limited to two trees per household to ensure all customers have an opportunity to purchase trees.  Advanced purchase is

Two convicted of making and selling meth

31-year-old Marco Garnica and 40-year-old Stacy Bass both of Fort Dodge were convicted of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.  Garnica and Bass were also convicted on one count of distributing methamphetamine.  They both admitted their involvement in a conspiracy that distributed more than 50 grams of pure meth in the Fort Dodge area from December 2009 through April 2010.  On

Anderson pleads not guilty

Laurie Anderson is pleading not guilty to charges related to allegedly neglecting her dependent adult patient. The 28-year-old Arcadia woman pleaded not guilty Monday to neglect of a dependent person and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. 

Carroll County receives second payment for Sauk Rail Trail paving project

Carroll County received their 2nd payment from the State of Iowa as part of the grant to help pay for the paving of the Sauk Rail Trail.  The payment of over 319,500 dollars covers 95 percent of the payments made by the county during the months of June and July.  The money will be transferred from the Sauk Rail Capital fund back to the general fund.  Carroll made a 4th payment this

Local FFA chapters do well in weekend event

The Carroll and East Sac County FFA’s both had a successful weekend at the Iowa FFA career development event held Saturday at Iowa State University.  The Carroll Area FFA Chapter was named reserve champion team in the livestock evaluation competition.  The team consisted of Nick Fitzsimmons who finished as a top 10 individual and was honored for his individual performance in sheep

18-year-old arrested for burglary in Sac County

Car show held on sunday with Pictures

Coon Rapids couple likely died of lack of oxygen in well

Initial test results indicate the couple who died earlier this month in a rural Guthrie County well likely died from a lack of oxygen. The Coon Rapids couple, 36-year-old Jamie Eyberg and his 34-year-old wife, Ann, died August 14.  Guthrie County Sheriff Marty Arganbright says samples of air indicated there was an extremely low level of oxygen down in the well. “Coon Rapids Fire

Saint Anthong get money for Community Campaign Project

Saint Anthony Regional Hospital is announcing that they have received $20,000 dollars for their Emergency Department Expansion and Renovation Project. The money is coming from the Monsanto Fund which is a private foundation and part of the Monsanto Company. Monsanto is also the parent company of Channel Bio whose central regional office is located in Carroll. 

Campbell and King debate

There will be a candidate debate in late October for Iowa’s Fifth District Congressman seat. At least that is what is being released from the Campaign Office of Democratic Candidate Matt Campbell. In the release Campbell says he agreed to debate Republican Incumbant Steve King in Sioux City on October 23rd.

Carroll 4H members receive more recognition at State Fair

Carroll County 4-H Members are earning more recognition this week from this year’s Iowa State Fair, this time in oral communication. Four different categories are judged in this division at the fair and they include; educational presentations, working exhibits, extemporaneous speaking, and communication through posters. 

Carroll to get assistance for first time home buyers

Carroll will receive a grant worth 362,500 dollars from the Home Investment Partnership Program to help with down payment assistance for first time homebuyers.  The city had to match with 30,000 dollars and Laurie Gilbert, Region 12 Housing Program Manager says how the city’s money will be used.

New diving platforms for Carroll Recreational Center

The Rec Center in Carroll is getting new diving platforms for the indoor pool.  City Councilman Tom Tait says the old platforms are shot and needed to be replaced.  The city received two bids for the project with a best bid of 15,820 dollars and 50 cents.  Parks and Rec’s Director Jack Wardell says what the new platforms will be used

IKM/Manning Schools will be looking for votes throughout next month when they have two projects competing for grants with Pepsi’s Refresh Everything. Pepsi Refresh Everything puts up 1000 projects each month for vote with the highest vote getter being awarded a grant to fund their project.

City Hall roof in Carroll to be repaired

The City Hall roof in Carroll was done in 1989 and has developed a few leaks that need to be repaired and the city hired JEO Consulting to do a study on what options they have.  The study showed the city needs to remove the existing roof including all the insulation and install a fully adhered membrane system that is tapered to provide positive drainage to the existing roof drains.  The

Sac County closes off gravel roads for projects

Grading work continues on the new Highway 20 east of the Raccoon River in Sac County. Gravel roads are being closed for varying amounts of time due to this work. The Sac County Engineers Office is releasing that Xavier Avenue is currently closed but will open around September first.

Tractor upgrades reduce farm deaths from rollovers

Deaths from tractor rollovers have been dropping in the U.S. as farmers
buy new tractors equipped with roll bars, reinforced cabs and seat belts

Former egg farm workers say complaints ignored

A state investigator is saying the private contractor who died Monday while

August saw 50 traffic deaths on Iowa highways

August was the deadliest month on Iowa’s roadways in more than three years. Senior Trooper Mark Domino, of the Iowa State Patrol’s Mason City post, says 50 people died on Iowa highways in August. He says August of 2010 is the state’s deadliest month since July of 2007 when 51 people were killed in traffic accidents.

One person dies in plane crash near Farm Progress Show

One person died today in a plane crash near the Farm Progress show in Boone County. Boone County Sheriff Ron Fehr says they received the report of the crash at 9:22 Thursday morning.

The plane crashed in a field north of the farm progress show just after taking off from the Boone Airport. The plane was towing an advertising banner for a farm show vender.

Waterloo Tyson plant temporarily stops production over animal concerns

Concerns over livestock herding have resulted in slaughtering operation disruptions at a Waterloo meat-packing plant. Production in the slaughter area of Tyson Fresh Meats was temporarily halted Tuesday afternoon after a U.S.D.A. inspector raised some concerns about the way hogs were being handled at the plant.

Iowa man shot by police is ex-corrections officer

     WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (AP) - The Webster City man who was shot and
